Apprenticeship Mission
The Mission of the Ironworkers Local 597 Joint Apprenticeship & Training Program is to provide quality training and a qualified workforce for the Employers of Ironworkers Local 597 and for the Apprentices and Journeymen of Ironworkers Local 597.

The Ironworkers Local 597 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program offers a 4 year apprenticeship program. During the Apprenticeship Program,accepted candidates will have the opportunity to learn an exciting trade that offers great pay and quality benefits. Apprentices begin their training by  attending and completing the 6 month pre-apprenticeship program. The Pre-Apprenticeship Program emphasizes safety training, fundamental introductions to each of the four primary aspects of our trades (Structural Steel, Cranes & Rigging, Reinforcing Steel and Architectural & Ornamental Steel)positive work ethics and attitudes and a brief introduction to the history of our great organization. Upon successful completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, the Pre-Apprenticeship will be given the opportunity to interview before the joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. If selected, they will begin a true "earn while you learn" opportunity which will open up endless doors for any eager, bright and hardworking individual. During the Apprenticeship Program the Apprentice will learn all the fundamental of Structural Steel Erection, Reinforcing Steel, Architectural & Ornamental Iron, Blue Print Reading, Instrumentation, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Flux Cored Arc welding, Foreman Training for Ironworker, History of the Ironworkers Union and much more. Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship Program, the new Journeyman will have all the tools, skills and certifications required to be a top notch Journeyman Ironworker. This is all accomplished through a mixture of related (classroom and hands on) training and on-the-job training. It's a win-win combination.

The Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) is made up of two representatives of the Management side of the Union whom are appointed by the Chairman of the Northeast Florida Ironworker Negotiation Committee.  These individuals are key personnel with our signatory contractors that have been appointed due to their vested interest and dedication to Apprenticeship training and Journeymen Upgrade Training.

Applicant Information
We are currently accepting application, Monday - Friday from 9am - 3pm at the Ironworkers Local 597 Union Hall     

Applicants for Pre-Apprenticeship shall possess the following minimum qualifications:    

  1. At least 18 years of age

  2. Physically capable of performing the work of the trade

  3. Have and maintain a valid driver's license throughout the pre-apprenticeship

  4. Have and maintain reliable transportation throughout the pre-apprenticeship

  5. Be willing to submit a drug screening for the current illegal use of drugs prior to acceptance into the pre-apprenticeship

  6. Verify military service/ training with a DD-214


Applicants for apprenticeship shall possess the following minimum qualifications, which are directly job related:

A. Age
Applicants shall not be less than eighteen (18) years of age. Applicants shall be required to provide proof of age upon selection.

B. Military Veterans
Applicants must submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.

C. Preapprenticeship
Applicants must possess a Certificate of Completion of Training from a bonafide registered preapprenticeship program.

D. Physical
Applicants will be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others. Applicants must sign a statement that they are physically capable to perform the duties of the trade.Applicants may be subject to a physical agility or fitness test, or screened for the current illegal use of drugs or both on acceptance into the program and prior to being employed.

E. Legal Residence
All applicants for apprenticeship must be able to prove they are legally eligible to work in the United States.

F. Drivers’ License
Applicants shall have a valid driver’s license.

G. Transportation
Applicants shall have reliable transportation.

H. Reference Letters
Applicants shall provide at least two letters of recommendation. Points based on these letters will be granted in the overall evaluation at the time of the interview.

I. Previous Experience
For consideration of any related and/or direct previous work experience to be considered, applicants must provide documentation.
